Growing up, having something sweet could make me forget what day it was. It felt like a little relief after a hard day’s work—though, let’s be honest, my “work” mostly consisted of dodging school assignments and avoiding chores before homework time. So, when my mom baked a never-big-enough cake, or our ever-so-talented neighbor brought over a batch of warm, gooey cookies, it made my day. Back then, you didn’t really think about how these magical treats were made—you just knew you wanted more before you’d even finished the first bite.

As you grow older, you start to notice the difference between baked goods that could survive a nuclear explosion and the ones made with fresh, quality ingredients. That’s when I fell in love with farmers markets and the charming mom-and-pop shops you stumble across—places crafting unforgettable homemade creations. Places where you can taste their creativity and childhood memories in every bite.

This is where I had my first handmade chocolate peanut butter treat—a giant Reese’s Cup lookalike, but without the weird manufacturing aftertaste and with even richer flavors. It was also the first time I tried a pumpkin bar, which has a texture similar to a lemon bar but with the warm, holiday flavors of pumpkin pie. The owner, Barbara Morrisette, has been serving up these and other delicious offerings—cookies, pastries, and pies—all made from scratch. For anyone questioning the freshness, just know you can actually see Barbara and her team preparing everything right in front of you, which makes it all the more tempting.
So far, I haven’t had anything I wouldn’t order again—and I’ve tried plenty.
